The Winnipeg Police Service faced a number of serious and violent incidents last night that we will review in part right now. These incidents tied up a significant number of officers as they dealt with risks to our community, and the safety of families. As a result, for much of the evening, more than 100 calls were waiting for service that we just could not get to. Despite the violence, due to the response, and tactics employed, our members were able to resolve the situation with no harm to themselves, or members of the public.
Homicide Arrests C16-94952
On May 12, 2106, at approximately 6:30 p.m. emergency personnel responded to a report of a male shot in the 600 block of Wellington Ave.
An adult male suffering a gunshot wound to the upper body was located in a residence at this location. He was transported to hospital in critical. He was later pronounced deceased.
The victim has been identified as George PRIESTON, 29-years-old, of Winnipeg.
A dog belonging to the victim was also shot during the incident.
Witnesses have advised that a military-style assault rifle with a high-capacity magazine was used in the incident.
Responding general patrol officers located a number of suspects in the area. Two adult males have been arrested and will face charges of:
- First Degree Murder
- Fail to Comply with Recognizance x 2
- Cruelty to Animals

Vehicle Robbery/Gun Arrests C16-94944
On May 12, 2016, at approximately 6:15 p.m. Winnipeg Police responded to a report of a male with a gun in the vicinity of Empress Street and Jack Blick Avenue.
It was reported that a suspect had been confronted by security personnel in the adjacent shopping centre at which time he produced a handgun. The suspect fled on foot to a parking lot on Jack Blick Avenue. At this time the suspect confronted driver of a vehicle, forcing her from the car and stealing the vehicle. The female victim was not physically injured.
The suspect fled the area at a high rate of speed. Members of the Tactical Support Team located the vehicle on Portage Avenue. Following a short pursuit, police were successful in stopping the vehicle in the area of Portage Avenue and Goulding Street.
Randy Terrance RYLE, 28-years-old, of Winnipeg has been arrested and faces 16 charges, including:
- Robbery with Firearm
- Theft under $5000
- Resist Arrest x 2
- Point Firearm x 3
- Carry Concealed Weapon
- Use Firearm in the Commission of an Offence x 2
- Careless Use Firearm
- Unauthorized Possession of Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
- Unauthorized Possession of a Motor Vehicle
- Possess Firearm Contrary to Court Order x 2
- Drive Dangerous
- Flight from a Peace Officer
- Warrant of Arrest x 4
Ryle was detained in custody.
Commercial Robbery Arrests C16-94952
On May 12, 2016 at approximately 7:20 p.m. police responded to a report of a commercial robbery in the 100 block of St. Anne's Road. A male suspect approached the two employees and demanded, and received a small amount of cash. The suspect then fled in a vehicle.
Responding units were able to locate the vehicle at various locations, but due to the high rate of speed and dangerous manner of driving were forced to abort the pursuits.
The suspect vehicle was subsequently located in the area Bishop Grandin Boulevard and St. Mary's Road at approximately 8:40 p.m.. General Patrol and Tactical Support Units were able to contain the vehicle and arrest the suspect.
Alexander Branislav JOVANOVICH, 31-years, of Winnipegwas arrest at the scene. Investigators charged Jovanovich with two earlier robberies.
He was charged with the following offences:
- Robbery x 3
- Disguise with Intent
- Flight from Peace Officer
- Drive Dangerous
- Drive Disqualified
- Fail to Comply Probation Order
He was detained in custody.
