Crime Prevention Tip

The holidays are rapidly approaching and with them come increased travel on the roadways and holiday shopping excursions.  Be sure to follow these safety tips to keep yourself and property protected.

Vehicle Safety:

  • Roads are busier at this time of year, be courteous and slow down to allow a merging vehicle to enter.  This can help prevent a 'Road Rage' incident from occurring;
  • Allow for plenty of time to get where you are going;
  • Keep your eyes 'scanning' at all times on the roadways for other vehicles and for potential hazards like kids or animals;
  • When driving or parked, ensure you lock your vehicle doors to avoid an unwanted thief from entering;
  • Put away distractions such as cell phones, Ipods, etc.  Many accidents are caused by cell phone use and distracted driving.  The call or text can wait. It may save your life;

Personal Safety:

  • Do not leave your purse or wallet in your vehicle or the trunk of the vehicle before entering a store.  Thieves watch for you to do this in parking lots.  Take your purse with you and carry it safely;
  • Do not carry large amounts of cash.  If you do have cash, keep it in your front pocket and do not display it when paying;
  • Never leave your purse in your shopping cart! It only takes a split second for it to 'go missing'.  Thieves will follow you for that opportunity;
  • Always keep your purse closed (zipped / snapped up) to prevent a thief from easily reaching in and removing your wallet;
  • Be aware of your surroundings, as thieves will try all kinds of ways to get close to you to get what you have;
  • Walk with confidence, as to not appear as an easy target;
  • Go with a friend;
  • If shopping at night, park in a well lit parking lot. If you feel uncomfortable walking to your car alone, most places will be happy to have security accompany you.

With these safety tips in mind, we hope you enjoy your holiday shopping!
