Stolen Vehicle – Arrest: C17-281343
On December 15, 2017, at approximately 5:55 a.m., a male suspect attended to the 300 block of Sydney Avenue where he located an unoccupied car parked and running behind a residence. The suspect entered the vehicle and drove off.
At approximately 6:00 a.m., District 3 General Patrol members observed the stolen vehicle in the area of Redwood Avenue and Main Street. The vehicle, travelling at a high rate of speed, failed to stop for a red light at the intersection and continued westbound.
Officers pursued the vehicle to the area of Redwood Avenue and Arlington Street where it was involved in a collision and struck both a light standard and a tree. The driver of the stolen vehicle continued to flee until the vehicle came to a stop in the 800 block of Redwood Avenue.
The driver then exited the stolen vehicle and attempted to run but was apprehended by officers after a short foot pursuit.
A 17-year-old male of Winnipeg has been charged with:
- Theft of Motor Vehicle
- Flight while Pursued by Peace Officer
- Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle
- Fail to Comply Condition Undertaking by Judge/Justice
He was detained in custody.
With cold temperatures, many motorists are heating up their cars before heading out on the road. The Winnipeg Police Service wishes to remind motorists that there are several things you can do to keep your vehicle safe:
- Never leave your vehicle unattended, running or not, for any length of time while the keys are in the ignition.
- Never leave children or pets in an unattended vehicle, especially one that is running.
- Don't leave your spare keys and garage door opener inside your vehicle.
- Never leave valuables on display inside your vehicle.
- Install a remote starter.
- Use a steering wheel lock.
- Install an alarm system.
- Use common sense.
Residential Break & Enter – Arrest: C17-281575
On December 15, 2017, at approximately 11:45 a.m., a male suspect, while operating a stolen vehicle, attended to a residence in the 300 block of Manitoba Avenue. The suspect broke a window and entered the house.
Members of the Winnipeg Police Service were contacted and began to arrive on scene, observing the suspect exit the residence with a box containing stolen belongings. The suspect immediately ran to the stolen vehicle and led officers on a pursuit that was aborted due to the suspect's dangerous driving.
The suspect continued to drive the stolen vehicle erratically and crashed into a fence at the intersection of Aikins Street and Pritchard Avenue. Members of the K9 unit tracked the suspect to a residence in the 300 block of Magnus Avenue where a male was placed under arrest.
The investigation continued by members of the Major Crimes Unit.
Tyler Robert Byington, a 19-year-old male of Winnipeg, has been charged with:
- Break Enter & Theft - Dwelling House
- Flight while Pursued by Peace Officer
- Driving While Disqualified
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime over $5,000
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order
He was detained in custody.
Carjacking – Arrests: C17-282032
On December 16, 2017, at approximately 12:00 a.m., two suspects attended to the first 100 block of St. Mary's Road and confronted two occupants of a parked vehicle who were waiting for the owner of the vehicle while he was inside a nearby restaurant.
Both suspects produced weapons and demanded the occupants exit the vehicle.
The victims fled as the suspects entered the vehicle, however, the owner was alerted to the theft and attempted to enter the front passenger door. One suspect, who was in the driver seat, put the vehicle into reverse and sped off, causing the owner to jump from the vehicle.
Officers located the stolen vehicle abandoned in the 100 block of Enfield Crescent a short time later.
Members of the K9 unit attended and tracked to a recycling bin at the rear of a nearby apartment building where a male suspect was found hiding within.
The same K9 unit tracked to the 100 block of Kitson Street where a female was taken into custody.
The investigation continued by members of the Major Crimes Unit.
A 41-year-old male of Winnipeg has been charged with:
- Theft of Motor Vehicle
- Robbery (x2)
- Possession of a Weapon
- Fail to Comply Condition Recognizance by Judge/Justice
A 31-year-old female of Winnipeg has been charged with:
- Theft of Motor Vehicle
- Robbery (x2)
- Possession of a Weapon
Both were detained in custody. Please note that their names have not been released as charges have not been formally laid yet.
Shooting – Investigation: C17-282155
On December 16, 2017, at approximately 4:00 a.m., emergency personnel responded to the report of a shooting at a residence in the 300 block of Aikins Street.
Upon arrival, an injured adult female was located. She was transported to hospital in critical condition and has since been upgraded to stable condition where she remains.
A second victim, a youth male, is currently in hospital in stable condition.
