Winnipeg Police Service News Release

MONDAY, JANUARY 24^th, 2011

WARRANT EXECUTED- COMMERICAL ROBBERIES ARRESTS C11-15875

On January 22^nd, 2011 at approximately 4:25 a.m., Winnipeg Police Service Uniform Members responded to a report of a commercial robbery that had just occurred at a convenience store within the 600 block of Ellice Avenue.

A male and a female suspect, with their identities disguised and armed with knives, entered the store and confronted the female clerks, demanding money.

After obtaining an undisclosed amount of cigarettes, both suspects fled the store to an awaiting vehicle.

Then at approximately 5:10 a.m., Members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a convenience store within the 700 block of Mountain Avenue for a report of commercial robbery.

Upon arrival it was learned that three suspects, two males and one female, all of whom have their identities disguised, entered the store and proceeded to the cash register area. At one point, one of the male suspects produced a handgun and after receiving an undisclosed amount of the cash and cigarettes, the three suspects fled the store to an awaiting vehicle.

There were no reports of injuries in either of these incidents.

A short time later, patrolling Uniform Officers located a vehicle believed to be involved in the commission of these offences. A residence within the 200 block of Reitta Street was surrounded and the Tactical Support Team assisted in the execution of the search warrant.

Just before 10:00 a.m. a number of individuals exited the house and were taken into custody without incident.

The following individuals are now facing charges for their alleged involvement in these incidents:

Fail to comply with conditions of Recognizance X 2

Shanastene Irene MCLEOD 21 years of Winnipeg

Breach of Probation X 2

Fail to comply with conditions of Recognizance X 6

Julian CHOKEN 37 years of Winnipeg

Robbery with Firearm

Possession of Goods Obtained by Crime (Under $5000)

Fail to comply with conditions of Recognizance X 2

All three individuals have been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON- ARRESTS C11-14888

As previously released, on January 21^st, 2011 at approximately 8:25 p.m. the Winnipeg Police Service along with Emergency Responders attended to a hotel in the 800 block of Main Street for a report of a stabbing.

Four suspects, three males and one female, approached the 33 year old male victim. After a brief conversation the victim is physically assaulted by the suspects. The male victim received numerous stab wounds to the upper body area. This assault was stopped by other patrons who come to the victim's aid and the suspects fled the scene.

The victim was subsequently transported to the hospital in critical condition and was later upgraded to stable condition.

As a result of an investigation by Members of the Division 13 Crime Unit, on January 22^nd, 2011 at approximately 1:00 a.m., officers attended to the area of Austin Street North and Euclid Avenue where the suspects were arrested without incident.

The following individuals are facing charges for their alleged involvement in this incident:

Sheldon Donovan MUSWAGON, 23 years, John Alfred SCOTT, 18 years and Ryan Scott HARPER, 18 years, all from Winnipeg, have been charged with:

- Aggravated Assault

- Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose

SCOTT, MUSWAGON and HARPER were detained in custody, while the 16 year old female has been released on a Promise to Appear.

OUTSTANDING MALE- ARRESTED C10-196556

On November 5^th, 2010 the Winnipeg Police Service had requested the public's assistance in located a male wanted on an outstanding warrant for charges of Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Weapon for Dangerous Purpose.

On January 22^nd, 2011, Stephen Lee Donavon HOULE, 19 YEARS of Winnipeg was located and arrested on the strength of the warrant.

HOULE was detained in custody.

COMMERCIAL BREAK AND ENTERS C11-16311

Recently the Winnipeg Police Service has investigated an increasing number of commercial break and enters that have occurred during the late night, or early morning hours. In many instances the front window or door of a business is smashed by the suspect(s) in order to gain access.

Once inside the thieves quickly gather anything of value prior fleeing the scene. Often the value of goods that are stolen is minimal in comparison to the cost of the damages the businesses.

Anyone who may have information regarding this type of incident, or any suspicious activity during these hours is asked to contact any police station or Crimestoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).

POLICE INVESTIGATION- WARRANT EXECUTED C11-15875

During the early morning hours of January 23^rd, 2011, a number of police units, along with the assistance of the tactical support team, executed a search warrant at a residence within the 200 block of Reitta Street.

A number of individuals are currently being interviewed.

This investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. There will not be any further information released on this matter today.

SUNDAY, JANUARY 23^rd, 2011

11:00 a.m.

FIRE INVESTIGATION- GROW OPERATION C11-4892

On January 22^nd, 2011 at approximately 4:45 p.m. Emergency Services Responders attended to a residence within the 1300 block of William Avenue for a report of a residential house fire.

Upon arrival, Officers located a 29 year old male who had sustained injuries in connection with this incident. He was transported to the hospital in unstable condition by Winnipeg Paramedics.

As the Winnipeg Fire Department was extinguishing the fire, a marihuana grow operation was discovered within the residence and the Winnipeg Police Service Drug Unit was called into assist.

Subsequent investigation by the Drug Unit has resulted in the following items being seized:

Approximately 710 Cannabis Marihuana Plants, with an estimated street value of $800,000.00, and
Assorted Grow Operation Equipment, estimated at $20,000.00.

This investigation will be continuing by members of the Drug Unit. At this time no charges have been laid.

FIRE INVESTIGATION- GROW OPERATION R11-4898

On January 22^nd, 2011 at approximately 7:30 p.m. Emergency Services Responders were dispatched to a residence within the 700 block of Clifton Street for a working fire.

Upon arrival, a 50 year old male was located and subsequently transported to the hospital in stable condition.

While the Winnipeg Fire Department was extinguishing the fire, a marihuana grow operation was discovered within the residence.

The Winnipeg Police Service Drug Unit was called in to assist in dismantling the grow operation. Through the course of their investigation a large quantity of cannabis marihuana plant material and approximately $1,500.00 in assorted equipment was seized.

This investigation is continuing by Uniform Members of Division 11.

SATURDAY, JANUARY 22^nd, 2011

COMMERCIAL ROBBERIES- ARREST C11-14430

On January 21st, 2011 at approximately 7:15 a.m., Winnipeg Police Service received a report of a commercial robbery that had just occurred to a convenience store located in the 600 block of Ellice Avenue by a suspect male armed with a knife.

The suspect male entered the store and demanded money from the 45 year female clerk. He fled the store prior to anything being obtained.

Later that morning at approximately 7:50 a.m., the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a convenience store within the 800 block of Arlington Street for a report of commercial robbery that had just occurred.

Upon arrival officers learned that a suspect male, armed with a knife, had entered the store and demanded money from the 55 year old female clerk. As this was occurring another store employee became aware the incident and the suspect fled the store empty handed.

Numerous units responded to the area and began searching for the suspect and at approximately 11:20 a.m., patrolling Division 11 Officers located and arrested the suspect male at the intersection of Portage Avenue and Smith Street without incident.

As a result of the continued investigation by members of the Major Crimes Unit, this suspect male is alleged to be responsible for the additional commercial robberies:

- On April 28^th, 2007 at approximately 4:30 a.m. a convenience store in the 600 block of Ellice Avenue

- On April 29^th, 2007 at approximately 11:30 p.m. a convenience store in the 500 block of William Avenue

- On April 30^th, 2007 at approximately 4:30 a.m., a convenience store located in the 800 block of Arlington Street.

During the commission of the above noted incidents the suspect male was armed with a knife and received an undisclosed amount of money. There were no injuries sustained to any of the store employees.

Ralph Joseph LINKLATER, 36 years of Winnipeg has been charged with two counts of Robbery with a weapon as well as the outstanding warrant for the previous three counts of Robbery with a weapon.

LINKLATER was detained in custody.

COMMERCIAL ROBBERY- ARREST C11-149771

On January 21st, 2011, at approximately 11:15 p.m., Winnipeg Police Service Division 16 Uniform Members responded to a report of a commercial robbery that had just occurred to a business within the 1^st 100 block of Osborne Street.

Upon arrival officers learned that a male suspect, having his identity disguised and while carrying a knife, attended to the cash register area and demanded money from the 35 year old female clerk. The suspect received an undisclosed amount of money and fled the store.

Patrolling Officers began searching the immediate area and located the suspect in the area of the Osborne Street Bridge.

Nolan Ray COUTU, 30 years of Winnipeg has been charged with the following offences:

- Robbery with a weapon

- Wear disguise with intent, and

- Breach of Probation

He has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

HOMICIDE INVESTIGATION – ARRESTS - UPDATE C09-121971

As previously released, on June 13^th, 2009 at approximately 10:35 p.m., police had been called to the area of the 500 block of Manitoba Avenue regarding two males that had been shot.

Upon arrival, two males were located suffering from gunshot wounds to the mid-sections of their bodies. A 27 year old male victim had been conveyed to hospital in stable condition and a 28 year old male victim, identified as Wayne Roger MICHELLE, had been conveyed in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries.

The investigation has revealed that the two victims were walking in the area when they were approached by the suspects and a firearm was discharged, striking both victims.

As a result of the continued investigation by Members of the Homicide Unit two males alleged to be responsible have been arrested.

William Evan LAPORTE, 21 years and an 18 year old male, who was a youth at the time of the offence, have been charged with 1^st degree Murder and Attempt Murder with a Weapon.

Both males have been detained.

SEXUAL ASSAULT C11-13123

On January 19, 2011 members of the Winnipeg Police Service took the report of a sexual assault which occurred on January 18, 2011 at approximately 2:00 p.m. in the area of the 400 block of Portage Avenue.

A 28 year old female victim was walking in the area of the 400 block of Portage Avenue when she observed a male suspect walking towards her. The suspect passed the victim when she heard him turn around and begin to follow her. It was at this time the suspect grabbed the victim from behind and groped her to the lower body. The victim screamed and the suspect fled the area on foot.

The suspect is described as: Male, in his 20's, 6'00" in height, slim build, wearing a dark ¾ length winter jacket with a fur trim hood and a camouflage design, dark baseball cap, baggy denim pants and skateboard style shoes with tan soles.

COMMERCIAL ROBBERY ARRESTS C11-13359

Between December 2010 and January 2011, numerous businesses within the City of Winnipeg were robbed of prescription medication.

The incidents are as follows:

· December 7^th, 2010 – 600 block of Kildare Avenue

· December 16^th, 2010 – 800 block of Keewatin Street

· December 16^th, 2010 – 200 block of Henderson Highway

· December 24^th, 2010 – 1100 block of Concordia Avenue

· December 28^th, 2010 – 400 block of Henderson Highway

· December 28^th, 2010 – 200 block of Henderson Highway

· December 28^th, 2010 – 500 block of London Street

· December 28^th, 2010 – 700 block of Watt Street

· January 18^th, 2011 – 200 block of Henderson Highway

· January 19^th, 2011 – 1600 block of Kenaston Boulevard

As a result of an ongoing investigation by members of the Major Crimes Unit, it's alleged that the suspect would enter the businesses while attempting to conceal his identity and confront the store clerk(s). Demands were made and in many cases, the suspect would flee after robbing the business of prescription medication. No serious injuries occurred in any of the events.

On January 19, 2011, at approximately 2:50 p.m., two male suspects attended to a business in the 1600 block of Kenaston Boulevard. One of the suspects confronted a store clerk while concealing his identity and demanded prescription medication. The clerk complied and the suspect attempted to flee in an awaiting vehicle.

Due to the efforts of officers nearby, both suspects were taken into custody.

Nathan Keith HAMM, 26 years has been charged with Robbery with Intent and Theft x 10 as a result of his alleged involvement.

Joshua HAMM, 22 years has been charged with Robbery with Theft as a result of his alleged involvement.

They have been detained.

STRONG ARM ROBBERY – UPDATE C10-267230

As previously released, on November 22, 2010 at approximately 11:45 a.m. a 53 year old male victim was walking westbound on McDermot Avenue approaching Sherbrook Street when he was confronted by two male suspects.

One of the suspects, believed to be armed with a weapon demanded money from the victim. When the victim advised that he did not have any money, one of the suspects kicked him in the lower body and proceeded to steal a ring that the victim was wearing as well as a bag containing various medications.

The suspects then fled the area and police were notified. The male victim received medical treatment for minor injuries.

Suspect Male #1: Black, 21 to 23 years, 5'10" tall with a skinny build, short black hair and a slight moustache. The suspect was wearing a red and black checked jacket.

Suspect Male #2: Aboriginal in appearance, 28 to 31years, 6'3"-6'4" tall, with a heavy build. He was wearing a black hat, jeans and a grey jacket.

The Grey Cup ring is described as; gold in colour with a diamond on the top and a blue background. Inscribed on the ring is "score 47-17, Number 30, Position FB."

COMMERCIAL ROBBERY C11-12518

On January 18, 2011 at approximately 11:00 a.m., uniform members responded to a robbery at a drug store located in the 200 block of Henderson Highway.

Investigators have learned that a lone male suspect concealing his identity entered the business and attended to the service counter. A 20 year old female employee attempted to assist the male when he forced his way behind the counter. A physical altercation began involving the suspect and two other store employees, a 55 year old female and 54 year old male. Both employees were physically assaulted as a result of the incident.

The suspect is described as: Male, Caucasian, 6'0" in height with and average build.

COMMERCIAL ROBBERY C11-12961

On January 18, 2011 at approximately 11:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to a business in the 200 block of Regent Avenue West regarding a commercial robbery.

A lone male suspect entered the business, produced a knife and demanded that the cash till be opened. A 26 year old female employee complied with the demands and the suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspect is described as follows: Male, Caucasian, between 5'10" & 5'11" in height, medium build and approximately 160 lbs.

No one was injured.
