FESTIVE SEASON CHECKSTOP PROGRAM

IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10-287907

On December 20, 2010, shortly after 5:30 am, a 21 yr old male was observed operating a vehicle erratically in the area of Corbett Bay. Members of the Winnipeg Police Service attended to the scene. As a result of this incident, a 21 year old male is facing charges of: Drive Impaired, Refusal, and Drive Disqualified.

The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.

IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10-288459

On December 20, 2010, shortly after 7:45 pm, a male was observed operating a vehicle in the area of the 1100 block of College Avenue. Members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Season Checkstop Program arrested a 58 year old male who is facing the following charges: Drive Impaired and Drive over 80 mg/%.

The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.

IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10-288522

On December 20, 2010, shortly after 9:45 pm, a male was observed operating a vehicle on Pipeline Road. Members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Season Checkstop Program arrested a 26 year old female who is facing the following charges: Drive Impaired and Drive over 80 mg/%

The female's name will be released once formal charges are laid.

IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10-288518

On December 20, 2010, shortly after 9:15 pm, a 59 year old male was operating his vehicle in the 1200 block of Main Street. Members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Season Checkstop Program arrested the male who now faces the following charges: Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mg/%.

The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.

IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10-288370

On December 20, 2010, shortly after 5:30 pm, a male was observed operating a vehicle in the area of Pipeline Road and Adsum Drive where he collided with several vehicles and fled the scene. Winnipeg Police Service members located the 36 year old male.

As a result of this incident, the male is facing charges of: Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mg/% and Leave the Scene of Motor Vehicle Collision and Drive without Insurance.

The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.

IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10-288669

On December 21, 2010, shortly after midnight, a 44 year old male was observed operating a vehicle in the area of Margaret Avenue and Aikins Street when he was stopped by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Season Checkstop Program.

As a result of this incident, a 44 year old male is facing charges of: Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mg/%.

The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.

IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10-288708

On December 21, 2010, shortly after 1:45 am, a male was observed operating a vehicle in the area of Main Street and Inkster Boulevard. The 38 year old male was stopped by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Season Checkstop Program and arrested.

As a result of this incident, the male is facing charges of: Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mg/%.

The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.

IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10-288688

On December 21, 2010, shortly after 1:45 am, a male was observed operating a vehicle in the area of Main Street and Atlantic Avenue. The 44 year old male was stopped by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Season Checkstop Program and arrested.

As a result of this incident, the male is facing charges of Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mg/%.

The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.

IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10-289315

On December 21, 2010, shortly after 7:45 pm, a male was stopped in the area of Henderson Highway and Oakland Avenue due to his manner of driving. The 38 year old male was stopped by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Season Checkstop Program and arrested.

As a result of this incident the male is facing charges of: Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mg/%.

The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.

IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10-289500

On December 21, 2010, shortly after 7:45 pm, a male was observed operating his vehicle in the area of Blenheim Avenue and St. Mary's Rd. The 45 year old male was stopped by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Season Checkstop Program and arrested.

As a result of this incident, the male is facing charges of: Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mg/%.

The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.

IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10-289530

On December 22, 2010, shortly after 2:00 am, a male was observed operating his vehicle in the area of Rue Archibald and Rue Plinguet. The 22 year old male was stopped by members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Season Checkstop Program and arrested.

As a result of this incident, the male is facing charges of: Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mg/%.

The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.

STABBING C10-289619

On December 22, 2010, at approximately 8:30 am, members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a stabbing incident in the area of the 1000 block of Selkirk Avenue.

An injured adult male was located and subsequently conveyed to hospital in critical condition. He has since been upgraded to stable condition.

Members of the District 3 Crime Unit are continuing with the investigation. Several individuals are currently being interviewed by Detectives.

COMMERCIAL ROBBERY C10-289204

On December 21, 2010 at approximately 5:00 p.m., officers responded to a commercial robbery at a restaurant located in the 200 block of Carlton Street.

The investigation has revealed that a lone male suspect, while armed with a knife attended to the bar area of the restaurant and confronted a 20 year old female employee. The suspect subsequently demanded that the till be opened. An undisclosed amount of cash was provided and the suspect fled the area on foot.

The victim, including another employee (a 26 year old male) followed the suspect southbound on St Mary Avenue. At one point, the suspect stopped and confronted the other employee with a metal object. The victim was not injured and the suspect made good his escape.

The suspect is described as: Male, Caucasian, 32 -35 years of age, heavy build, clean shaven and short dark hair.

RESIDENTIAL ROBBERY C10-289364

On December 21, 2010 at approximately 9:20 p.m., uniform members were dispatched to a residential robbery at a home located in the 500 block of Simcoe Street.

It has been determined that 3 or 4 male suspects attended to the residence and confronted 2 occupants, a 59 year old male and 65 year old female. The suspects made demands and subsequently assaulted the male to the upper body with an unknown object, causing a minor injury.

One of the suspects armed with a gun confronted the female victim. As a result of what was taking place, the female victim activated the panic button on the house alarm.

The suspects fled the area. Nothing was stolen as a result of the incident.

The suspects are described as: 3-4 males, approximately 20-25 years, 5'8"-"6'0" in height and a medium build.

The investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).

CRIME STOPPERS INFORMATION ON TAPE MAY INCREASE LEADS

The Board of Winnipeg Crime Stoppers is pleased to report on the new initiative with the inclusion of Crime Stoppers contact information on Police Line tape which may result in more tips coming to Crime Stoppers.

Julie Eccles, the Chair of Winnipeg Crime Stoppers is excited that the police have included Crime Stoppers Tips-Line contact information on the new tape. "The more tips we can get, the more crimes we can solve," says Eccles.

The bright yellow tape, used to mark off crime or accident scenes can also be a good source of tips from anyone in the area. "You never know who is watching the scene, what they know and how they'll react. Our contact information on the tape may encourage them to call us with information that can help solve the crime. With Crime Stoppers they're always anonymous."

Crime Stoppers' premise is that there is always someone who has information about any crime. Getting those tips and passing them on to the Police is what has made Winnipeg Crime Stoppers so successful.

Winnipeg Crime Stoppers recently celebrated a milestone. Over $100,000,000 in value of crimes solved and drugs stopped from going onto the streets of Winnipeg.

Over 13,000 cases have been cleared since the inception of Crime Stoppers in Winnipeg in 1984.

UNDERWATER SEARCH AND RECOVERY EFFORTS TO RESUME C10-276345

The Winnipeg Police Service Underwater Search and Recovery Unit suspended the search for Nathaniel Thorassie on December 7^th. At that time diving conditions were extremely dangerous due to thin transitional ice. Despite these challenges the Unit was able to spend 8 hours in the river over two days covering the highest probability areas. Diving was halted for the safety of the searchers and was to be re-evaluated at a later date.

Volunteer members of the Canadian Amphibious Search Team (C.A.S.T.) and Manitoba Search and Rescue conducted two days of diving on December 11^th and 12^th and met with negative results.

The Winnipeg Police Service Underwater Search and Recovery Unit have re-evaluated diving conditions, which are continuing to improve. The Unit plans to resume diving operations early in the New Year, possibly as early as January 2^nd. The Canadian Amphibious Search Team will also be conducting dive operations under the direction of the Winnipeg Police Service Dive Unit.

The dive operation will continue for as long as conditions permit. We are committed to this action to help Nathaniel's family find closure in this tragedy.

ARSON ARREST C10-239194

On October 18^th, 2010 at 11:58 a.m., Uniform members were dispatched to a fire at a residence in the 1600 block of Alexander Avenue.

There were no injuries sustained as a result of the fire however, the damage caused is estimated at $180,000.00.

Members of the Arson Strike Force continued with the investigation. It has been determined that fire was caused due to overloaded and faulty wiring used to facilitate a marihuana grow operation.

A 52 year old male had previously been arrested as a result of the grow operation.

Arson Strike Force members arrested the same 52 year old male on December 19. He is facing a charge of: Arson by Negligence. He was released on a promise to appear.

FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION - UPDATE C10-288077

On Monday, December 20, 2010 at approximately 11:20 a.m., emergency crews responded to a serious motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian in the area of Portage Avenue and Sherbrook Street.

The investigation has revealed that a Charter Bus was travelling northbound on Sherbrook Street when it turned eastbound onto Portage Avenue when it collided with a pedestrian walking northbound across Portage Avenue.

Gittel GOERTZEN, 67 years of Winnipeg was conveyed to hospital in critical condition. She has since succumbed to injuries sustained.

The investigation is continuing by members of the Central Traffic Unit.

DISTURBANCE INCIDENT C10-288190

On December 20, 2010 at approximately 1:40 p.m., uniform members were dispatched to a school located in the area of the 200 block of Speers Road regarding a male youth causing a disturbance.

Due to safety concerns, the school activated lockdown procedures.

No one was injured as a result of the incident.

Attending members located the male youth at his residence at which time he was taken into custody.

A 14 year old male is facing the following charges: Possess Weapon for Dangerous Purpose (knife) and Cause Disturbance.

He remains in police custody at this time.

FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION C10-288077

On Monday, December 20, 2010 at approximately 11:20 a.m., emergency crews responded to a serious motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian in the area of Portage Avenue and Sherbrook Street.

The 67 year old female pedestrian was conveyed to hospital in critical condition. She has since succumbed to injuries sustained.

The investigation is continuing by members of the Central traffic Unit.

It is anticipated that Portage Avenue will re-open to all traffic by 5:00 P.M.

STRONG-ARM ROBBERY C10-286143

On December 17, 2010 at approximately 7:40 p.m., Uniform members responded to a report of a male being robbed and physically assaulted in the area of the 800 block of Keewatin Street.

Attending members located a 49 year old male victim who was being assisted by passersby.

The investigation has revealed that the victim was walking to his parked vehicle when he was confronted by two males unknown to him. The suspects opened the door to their vehicle and demanded that the victim get in. After refusing, the victim was pulled into the vehicle against his will at which time he attempted to defend himself. It was at this time the suspects proceeded to seriously assault the victim to the upper body. The suspects drove the victim a short distance when he was thrown out of the vehicle. It was later discovered that several personal items belonging to the victim were stolen as a result of the incident.

The suspect vehicle sped off.

The victim was conveyed to hospital requiring medical treatment.

The suspects and vehicle is described as: Males, Aboriginal in appearance, in their 20's. The vehicle is described as a full size van or sport utility vehicle. The vehicle may have damage to the front driver side.

The investigation is continuing by members of the District 3 Crime Unit. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-2848 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).

MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION INVOLVING A PEDESTRIAN C10-287397

On December 19, 2010 at approximately 1:30 p.m., Uniform members were dispatched to the area of the 400 block of Young Street regarding a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian.

Investigating members have since learned that a 48 year old male had temporarily stopped his vehicle in a southbound direction on Young Street between Ellice Avenue and Sargent Avenue. He had just removed his young child from the vehicle when a southbound vehicle was observed approaching his location. The approaching suspect vehicle was observed to speed up and side swiped the victim's vehicle, subsequently colliding with the victim standing nearby.

The suspect vehicle sped off, leaving the victim behind with several lower body injuries. The child was not injured as a result of the incident.

The victim was conveyed to hospital in unstable condition, later upgraded to stable condition.

The suspect vehicle is described as a silver sedan, possibly a 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala which will have damage to the passenger side of the vehicle.

The investigation is continuing by members of the Central Traffic Unit. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-6271 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).

POLICE OFFICER ASSAULTED – ARREST C10-286860

On December 18, 2010 at approximately 7:20 p.m., officers came into contact with an injured male in the area of Austin Street and Euclid Avenue who required medical attention. The 38 year old male was conveyed to hospital for treatment and subsequently arrested on an outstanding warrant.

While in custody, the male became increasingly belligerent and aggressive toward officers. At one point, the suspect kicked a 36 year old officer to the lower body and then spit at him to the upper body.

The suspect continued to threaten officers while in custody. It was also determined that the suspect was not forthcoming with information regarding his true identity at the time of his arrest.

He is facing the following charges: Assault a Peace Officer, Utter Threats x 2 and Public Mischief.

He was detained at the Provincial Remand Centre.

IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10-287617

On December 19, 2010, shortly after 7:00 p.m., a 37 yr old male was observed operating a vehicle in the area of Balmoral Street and Notre Dame Avenue. The male admitted to consuming alcohol to members of the Winnipeg Police Service Festive Checkstop Program.

As a result of this incident a 37 year old male faces charges of Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mg/% and Drive without Licence. The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.

IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10-286545

On December 18^th, 2010, shortly after 8:00 AM, a female was operating her vehicle in the area of Ellice Avenue and Balmoral Street when she was stopped by members of the Winnipeg Police Service.

As a result of this incident, a 27 year old female faces charges of Drive Impaired, Drive Over 80 mgs% and Drive without a Licence.

The female's name will be released once formal charges are laid.

IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10-286504

On December 18^th, 2010, shortly after 7:30 AM, a male was allegedly found slumped over in the driver's seat of his vehicle in the area of Fermor Avenue and Rue Archibald by a passing motorist. Members of the Winnipeg Police Service were notified, attended and arrested the male.

As a result of this incident, Alexander Anthony ROSS, 41 years of Winnipeg has been charged with: Have Care and Control While Impaired, Have Care and Control While Over 80 mgs%, Fail to Comply with Conditions of Recognizance X3 and Breach of Probation.

IMPAIRED DRIVER ARREST – C10-286410

On December 18^th, 2010, shortly after 3:00 AM, a male was operating his vehicle in the area of Bishop Grandin Boulevard and Dakota Street in an erratic and dangerous manner when he was stopped by members of the Winnipeg Police Service.

As a result of this incident, a 21 year old male faces charges of Drive Impaired and Drive Over 80 mgs%.

The male's name will be released once formal charges are laid.
