CHILD ABANDONMENT X 2 – ARREST

On Saturday, October 20, 2012 at approximately 4:00 p.m., General Patrol Members responded to a residence located in the North End area of Winnipeg. A concerned citizen contacted police when they observed a male leave two small children unattended on a doorstep of the residence.
Police attended immediately and located two children under the age of 2, completely unsupervised. The outside temperature at the time was approximately eight degrees and raining.
Police were in attendance for several hours and the male did not return to check on the welfare of the children and no other persons attended to the residence. The children were unharmed and were appropriately attended to.
The investigation has revealed that the father of the children attended to this residence to turn them over to another family member and when he found no one home, he left them unattended.
On Monday, October 30, 2012 at approximately 7:30 p.m., a 24 year old male turned himself in to police and was arrested for Child Abandonment x 2.
He was detained in custody.
PROJECT RELAPSE: BREAK AND ENTER – ARRESTS C12-216507
Between March 2012 and October 2012, the Winnipeg Police Service launched an investigation known as "Project Relapse" after unknown persons began methodically breaking into businesses across the city.
The break-ins were sophisticated in nature, in that alarms were circumvented and holes were cut in walls to enter the businesses and avoid alarm sensors. The suspect(s) then attacked and stole Safes and Automated Teller Machines (ATMS) from the locations. Approximately $100,000 in cash was stolen.
The incidents included the following:
- March 10 - 300 block of Ness Avenue (Restaurant)
- Between March 18 & 20 - 1800 block of Grant Avenue (Restaurant)
- Between April 10 & 11 - 700 block of Watt Street (Pharmacy)
- May 31- 1700 block of Ellice Avenue (Restaurant)
- Between June 3 & 4 - 1800 block of Pembina Highway (Grocery Store)
- June 8 - 1500 block of Regent Avenue (Restaurant)
- June 13 - 1700 block of Ellice Avenue (Restaurant)
- October 10 - 1100 block of Pembina Highway (Business)
- October 15 and 16 - 2500 block of Portage Avenue (Business)
- October 26 - 1000 block of Nairn Avenue (Business)
As a result of an intensive on-going investigation by members of the East District Crime Unit and District 2 Crime Unit, two males were located and arrested in the area of the 600 block of Talbot Avenue at approximately 6:15 a.m., on Friday, October 26, 2012.
Cary Scott PRESTON, 36 years of Winnipeg has been charged with: Break, Enter a Place x 11
Kyle Robert BARR, 20 years of Winnipeg has been charged with: Break, Enter a Place and Breach of Probation.
Both were detained in custody.
FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION – ARREST

On Thursday, November 1, 2012 at 1:00 P.M., members of the Winnipeg Police Service and Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic Service attended to the 1600 block of Wellington Crescent for a report of a serious motor vehicle collision.
An investigation revealed that a Pontiac Torrent being operated by a 17 year old male with four passengers lost control and struck a tree at this location. One 17 year old female passenger was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Two 17 year old female passengers were taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries and have since been upgraded to stable condition. A 17 year old male passenger as well as the driver were both taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The 17 year old male driver is facing charges of Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle Causing Death and Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle Cause Bodily Harm X 3.
He has been released on a Promise to Appear.
The Winnipeg Police Service Traffic Collision Investigation Section is continuing the investigation. Anyone that may have witnessed the motor vehicle collision or have information regarding this incident is asked to contact Investigators at 204-986-6271.
MARYK CHILDREN INVESTIGATION UPDATE – ABDUCTION ARREST C08-184322
On Thursday, November 1, 2012, the Winnipeg Police Service Missing Persons Unit attended Mexico City, Mexico, where they arrested Kevin MARYK on the strength of two Canada-wide Warrants for his involvement in the abduction of his two children, Abby and Dominic MARYK.
Kevin MARYK was extradited back to Canada from Mexico and has been charged with:
- Warrant of Arrest - Abduction in Contravention of a Court Order x 2
- Warrant of Arrest – Conspiracy to Commit an Indictable Offence – Abduction x2
MARYK was detained in custody. This investigation is continuing.
SHOTS FIRED C12-221713
On Friday, November 2, 2012 at approximately 3:30 a.m., Winnipeg Police Members responded to the 400 block of Sherbrook Street regarding shots fired.
Initial investigation revealed that unknown person(s) attended to a residence and fired multiple shots at a house occupied by several individuals. The suspect(s) immediately fled from the area.
No one in the house was injured as a result of the incident.
No arrests have been made at this time.

SUSPICIOUS PERSON C12-214669
On Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at approximately 6:00 p.m., General Patrol Members responded to a report of a suspicious person.
An investigation revealed between October 15 and October 23, an unknown male followed a 12 year old female by riding the same transit bus with her to and from school. The male would attempt to sit close to the victim and on one occasion followed the victim off the bus at which time the victim ran to safety.
The victim was not injured as a result of the incident.
The suspect is described as an older Caucasian male, average height, medium build with long grey/black hair and a brown beard. The male was wearing a black sweater, black jeans and black boots.
