On February 15th, 2012 the Winnipeg Police Service requested the public's assistance in locating a missing 17 year old male, Joseph SANDERSON.

SANDERSON has been safely located.

Winnipeg Police Service News Release

In response to media inquiries regarding a distracted driving provincial offence notice that was recently issued, the Winnipeg Police Service has the following response:

Distracted driving is a serious safety issue similar to impaired driving or speeding and numerous studies have concluded that it increases the likelihood of collisions.

The Winnipeg Police Service has conducted a review of this incident and has information that is contradictory to the information that has been depicted in the local media.

It is alleged that on March 2^nd, 2012 officers were in a police cruiser car that was travelling on Portage Avenue when they observed a male driver of a vehicle with a cell phone held to his ear. Officers were 7 to 8 feet away from the driver when this was observed. Emergency lighting equipment was activated and it took several blocks before the vehicle pulled over. A provincial offence notice was issued to the male driver of the vehicle.

The Winnipeg Police Service will not be discussing this specific incident any further as the proper forum to contest an offence notice is in a Provincial Court. A Judge or Judicial Justice of the Peace will hear the evidence and render a decision.

Winnipeg Police Service will continue to enforce the sections in the Highway Traffic Act related to Distracted Driving to ensure our roadways are safe.

UPDATE- DIVISION 11 INTELLIGENCE DIRECTED CRIME PREVENTION STRATEGY- ARRESTS

In February 2012, the Winnipeg Police Service combined the efforts of General Patrol members, the Community Support Unit, Foot Patrol Unit, Detectives, with the assistance of the Street Crimes Unit and the Tactical Support Unit, and arrested numerous individuals in connection with a number of robberies and other serious incidents in the downtown area.

Overview - between January 17^th, 2012 – February 14^th, 2012

96 individuals were arrested and
163 Provincial Offence Notices were issued

With the continued efforts of the Division 11 Crime Unit, along with assistance of general patrol members, it was learned that individuals known to one another were responsible for 10 separate robbery incidents. This investigation has resulted in the following:

- 17 individuals arrested

- 86 charges laid for offences of robbery, breaches of court orders and other criminal code offences.

- In addition an arrest warrant is being sought for an adult male who will being facing 13 criminal code charges

Winnipeg Police Service members are committed to reducing crime and will continue to work to provide a safer community for everyone.

ROBBERY/ THEFT INVESTIGATION- ARREST C11-75031

On March 5^th, 2012, just before 9:00 a.m. patrolling Winnipeg Police Service Members conducted a traffic stop in the area of Princess Street and Higgins Avenue on a Dodge Ram pickup with suspended registration. The driver of the truck, a 47 year old male was taken into custody without incident.

The 47 year old male is alleged to be involved in the following investigations and was turned over to the Major Crimes Unit:

- On April 9^th, 2011, at approximately 5:20 p.m theft of merchandise valued at $1000 from a large retail store located within the 200 block of St. Annes Road.

- On April 16^th, 2011, at approximately 2:45 p.m. two suspect males, one armed with a handgun and the other with bear spray attended to a business within the 400 block of Dawson Road where they demanded and received an undisclosed amount of money.

- On January 4^th, 2012, at approximately 6:00 p.m., $1200 in merchandise was stolen from a retail business within the 1700 block of Ellice Avenue.

- On February 29^th, 2012, at approximately 6:00pm, officers attended to a retail store within the 800 block of St James Street, for an attempted theft of electronic merchandise. The television valued at $1200 was recovered by store employees.

Colin J BUSKO, 47 years of Winnipeg has been charged with the following offences:

- Robbery with firearm

- Theft under x 3 and

- Unauthorized possession of a weapon x2

BUSKO has been detained in custody.

11:00 a.m.

COMMERICAL ROBBERY- ARREST C12-39546

On March 4^th, 2012 at approximately 1:40 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service members were called to a gas station within the 200 block of Sherbrook Street for a report of a male that was seen with a firearm.

Upon arrival officers met with the 22 year old male clerk and learned that the suspect was outside the business when he pointed a firearm at the clerk. The suspect then immediately fled the area and police were notified.

No shots were fired and there were no injuries.

Then at approximately 3:45 a.m. a male was a passenger within a taxi cab. This cab stopped in the area of Broadway Avenue and Young Street, when the male fare within the cab pointed a firearm at the 42 year old male driver. A brief struggle ensued between the suspect male and the driver causing a minor injury victim's upper body.

The suspect demanded money from the victim to which the victim complied. The suspect fled the scene and police were contacted.

A number of patrolling units attended to the area. A track initiated by a canine unit lead officers to a nearby suite within the area, where the suspect male was taken into custody without incident.

Terrance Jamie TRAVERSE, 28 years of Winnipeg has been charged with with a number of firearms related offences for his alleged involvement in this incident, including robbery with a firearm, two counts of point firearm and breach of probation.

TRAVERSE has been detained in custody.

COMMERICAL ROBBERY C12-40098

On March 5^th, 2012 at approximately 3:25 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service East District Members were dispatched to a convenience store with the 1800 block of Henderson Highway for a report of two suspect males that had just robbed the store.

Upon arrival officers met with the 34 year old male clerk who was not injured. The investigation has revealed that two males entered the store and after a short period of time, one of the suspects produced a knife and proceeded to gather cigarettes and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Both suspects fled the store and police were notified.

The suspects are described as:

Suspect #1:

- Male, Aboriginal in appearance, approximately 26 years of age, 5'6" tall wearing a black jacket, black pants and a hat

Suspect #2:

- Male, Aboriginal in appearance, 19 to 20 year of age wearing a black hoody, blue jeans and a hat

COMMERICAL ROBBERY C12-39260

On March 3^rd, 2012 at approximately 6:50 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service Members responded to a retail store within the 300 block of Provencher Boulevard for a report of a robbery that had just occurred by a lone male suspect.

Upon arrival officers met with the female clerk and learned that a male suspect had entered the business, attended to the cash counter and produced a note. The suspect fled the store after receiving an undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspect is described as:

- Male, Caucasian, 5'5"- 5'6" tall with a medium build. He was wearing a hoody and blue jeans.

This investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information regarding this incident or the suspect is asked to contact investigators at 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).

MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION- ROADWAY RE-OPENED C12-39103

Northbound Sturgeon Road had previously been closed at Saskatchewan Avenue as a result of motor vehicle collision involving a train.

Sturgeon Road has since been re-opened.

MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION INVOLVING A TRAIN C12-39103

Winnipeg Police Service Cadets are currently on scene in the area of Sturgeon Road and Saskatchewan Avenue assisting RCMP members.

Northbound Sturgeon Road has been closed at Saskatchewan Avenue.

Motorists are requested to avoid the area and choose an alternate route.
