As a result of a serious motor vehicle collision that has just occurred near the intersection of Main Street and Higgins Avenue the following roadways are closed:

Westbound Higgins is closed at Austin Street North

Eastbound Higgins is closed at King Street

Motorists and pedestrians are requested to take an alternate route.

POSSESS WEAPON- ARREST C11-121729

On June 12^th, 2011 at approximately 7:15 p.m., Winnipeg Police Service Airport Unit Officers responded to the groundside entrance area of the James Armstrong Richardson International Airport terminal building, for a report of a male that was seen carrying a knife.

When officers arrived they observed a suspect male waving a folding knife in the air. As numerous persons were within the immediate area, officers acted quickly and verbally directed the male to put the knife down.

After several minutes of officer's verbal commands to drop the knife, the male relinquished the knife and he was taken into custody without incident.

Joshua HAERLE, 19 years, from Missouri, United States of America, has been charged with Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose for his alleged involvement into this incident.

HAERLE has been detained in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

ASSAULT WITH WEAPON- ARRESTS C11-121355

On Saturday, June 11^th, 2011 at approximately 5:45 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service Division 11 Members, along with Emergency Services Responders received a call to a residence within the 400 block of Agnes Street for a report of a male that had been assaulted.

Upon arrival officers located a 35 year old male victim suffering from upper body injuries. There was also evidence of a nearby residence and vehicle that had been damaged.

Paramedics transported the victim to the hospital in stable condition.

Patrolling members searched the area and arrested a 27 year old male in the area of the 500 block of Agnes Street following a brief foot chase.

As a result of the continued investigation, the second suspect was arrested in an apartment building within the 200 block of Dufferin Avenue.

Jason Arthur COUTU, 27 years of Winnipeg has been charged with the following offences for his alleged involvement into this incident;

- Mischief under $5000

- Aggravated Assault

- Fail to comply with condition of undertaking

An 18 year old male from Winnipeg has been charged with;

- Aggravated assault

- Mischief under $5000

- Breach of probation

- Fail to comply with conditions of sentence order

ROBBERY WITH FIREARM- ARREST C11-120875

On Saturday June 11^th, 2011 just after 7:30 p.m. a 36 year old male and two females, aged 26 and 34 years, were walking in the area of Andrews Street and Burrows Avenue when they were approached by a lone male suspect. This suspect male pulled out a firearm that had been concealed and demanded the victims turn over a case of beer.

The victims complied with the suspects demands and turned over the property. Patrolling members of the Street Crime Unit were flagged down by the victims and immediately began searching the area.

Officers located and arrested the suspect male in a yard within the 500 block of Burrows Avenue without incident.

Aaron Vaughn MURDOCK, 24 years of Winnipeg has been charged with the following offences for his alleged involvement into this incident;

- Robbery with a firearm x 3

- Use firearm in commission of offence

- Possess weapon for dangerous purpose

- Point firearm

- Carry concealed weapon

- Possess firearm while prohibited

MURDOCK has been detained in custody.

POSSESS WEAPON- ARREST C11-120087

On Friday, June 10^th, 2011 shortly after 10:00 p.m. a lone male entered a taxi cab being operated by a 35 year old male driver in the area of Pembina Highway and Grant Avenue. Once inside the cab the suspect exposed a large knife that he had within a beer case and threatened to harm the driver if he did not drive him to a location.

At approximately 10:15 p.m., while driving in the area of Pembina Highway and Dalhousie Drive, the cab driver flagged down a patrolling police unit and the suspect was arrested without incident.

Thomas Wilfred TAYLOR, 36 years of Winnipeg has been charged with the following offences:

- Possessing substance for purposes of trafficking- Cannabis Marihuana

- Utter threat to cause death or bodily harm and

- Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

He has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.

MARIHUANA GROW- ARRESTS C11-119993

On Friday, June 10^th, 2011 at approximately 8:15 p.m. Winnipeg Police Service Members were called to a residence within the 900 block of Jubilee Street for a report of a domestic disturbance between a male and a female.

Upon arrival officers met with a female occupant and learned that the male had fled the scene but was later arrested by officers within the area of Calrossie Boulevard and Pembina Highway. During the course of their investigation a number of Marihuana plants were discovered within the residence.

Member of the Green Team assisted and a controlled drug and substance search warrant was obtained resulting in the following seizure:

- Approximately 300 marihuana plants and 500 marihuana clones, with an estimated street value of $880,000.00.

A 46 year old male and a 40 year old female will be facing charges for the production of controlled substance- Cannabis Marihuana. They have been released on a promise to appear.

ROBBERY INVESTIGATION C11-119587

On Friday June 10^th, 2011 at approximately 4:00 a.m. a 37 year old male was delivering newspapers in the area of Pritchard Avenue and Battery Street when he was approached by a lone male suspect armed with a gun.

The suspect directed the victim into the victim's car which was parked nearby and demanded he attend to various businesses to withdraw money from his bank card.

An undisclosed amount of money was stolen from the victim prior to the suspect forcing the victim to drop him off in the area of Main Street and Dufferin Avenue

The suspect is described as; Caucasian male with pale skin, approximately 60 years with long white/ grey hair to his shoulders. He was wearing a dark jacket and jeans.

Members of the Major Crimes Unit are continuing with this investigation. Anyone with information regarding this incident or the suspect is asked to contact them at 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).

SERIOUS MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION C11-120363

On Saturday, June 11^th, 2011 at approximately 2:40 a.m. Winnipeg Police Service Members along with Emergency Service Responders were dispatched to the intersection of Ellice Avenue and King Edward Street for report of a motor vehicle collision that had just occurred.

Upon arrival officers located two vehicles, a Volkswagon Golf and a Ford Explorer that had both sustained significant damage. A 31 year old female was transported to the hospital in critical condition with serious upper body injuries. Two male drivers, aged 29 and 56 years were both transported to the hospital stable condition.

This investigation is on going by members of the Central Traffic Unit.

TRAFFIC INCIDENT INVOLVING A MOTORCYCLE – ARREST C11-118331

On June 8^th, 2011 at approximately 10:30 p.m., uniform members from the East District, while patrolling in the area of Island Shore Boulevard observed a motorcycle travelling eastbound on Bishop Grandin Boulevard at a high rate of speed.

Officers observed two occupants and made attempts to catch up to the speeding motorcycle. A traffic stop was attempted near the intersection of Bishop Grandin Boulevard and Lagimodere Boulevard when officers activated their emergency equipment. The driver refused and fled from police northbound on Lagimodiere Boulevard.

The driver of the motorcycle continued northbound on Lagimodiere Boulevard, and again was observed to be driving in an erratic fashion placing himself, the passenger and members of the public at risk. It was at this time officers observed the motorcycle to have no licence plates.

The motorcycle proceeded eastbound onto Highway #1 reaching speeds up to 200 km\hr.

From a distance, the motorcycle was observed to turn northbound onto Highway #207 at a high rate of speed. Uniform members subsequently requested Air1 to attend the area. Within 2 minutes, Air1 had a visual on the motorcycle. The motorcycle continued to travel westbound onto Highway #15, then northbound onto Highway #101 and eventually stopping in the area of Gunn Road due to the coordinated efforts of Air1 and ground units.

A 20 year old male of Winnipeg has been charged with the following:

Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle.
Flight from Police Officer
Fail to Comply with Conditions of an Undertaking
Drive Carelessly
Drive an Unregistered Vehicle
Drive without Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance
Drive with Improper Class of Licence
Fail to Produce a Drivers Licence
Warrant to Apprehend

He was detained.

FIRE INVESTIGATION C11-118534

On June 9^th, 2011 at approximately 5:00 a.m., emergency personnel responded to a residence in the 500 block of Rathgar Avenue regarding a working fire.

The investigation has revealed that 2 adults and 2 children fled the residence. An adult female jumped from a 2^nd story window resulting in medical attention being required.

Damage is estimated at $200,000.00.

Members of the Arson Strike Force continue to investigate.

MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION INVOLVING A PEDESTRIAN C11-117195

On June 7^th, 2011 at approximately 2:15 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian near the area of St. Anne's Road and Fernwood Avenue.

Emergency personnel attended and located an 89 year old female pedestrian suffering from multiple injuries sustained as a result of the collision.

As a result of the incident and subsequent investigation, St. Anne's Road near Fermor Avenue was closed to traffic for several hours.

The investigation has revealed that the female pedestrian attempted to cross the southbound lanes of St. Anne's Road, just south of Fernwood Avenue in an easterly direction. As the pedestrian entered the median lane, she was struck by a southbound Hyundai which was being operated by a 38 year old male.

The pedestrian was conveyed to hospital where she remains in stable condition.

The investigation is continuing by members of the Central Traffic Unit.

COMMERCIAL ROBBERY - ARREST C11-117274

On June 7^th, 2011 at approximately 3:50 p.m., uniform members responded to a robbery incident at a gas bar located in the 1100 block of Logan Avenue.

Attending members learned that a male suspect entered the business while concealing his identity and armed with a canister of bear spray. The suspect attended behind the counter and demanded cash. An undisclosed amount of money was obtained and the suspect fled the area on foot.

Attending members located and addressed the male suspect walking in the area of Alexander Avenue and Blaine Street. It was at this time the suspect ignored the demands of officers and continued to flee the area on foot. Officers pursued the male in the south lane of Alexander Avenue when the suspect produced a canister of bear spray and pointed it in the direction of officers. The suspect was disarmed and subsequently taken into custody.

The investigation continued by members of the Major Crimes Unit. It was discovered that the same male suspect attended to a lounge located in the 1900 block of Bishop Grandin Boulevard on June 4^th, 2011 at approximately 12:50 a.m. while disguised and armed with a canister of bear spray. The suspect robbed the business of an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the area on foot.

Due to the efforts of uniform members and members of the Major Crimes Unit, Stephen Michael TOEWS, 21 years has been charged with: Robbery with a Weapon x 2, Disguise with Intent x 2, Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose x 2 and Assault Peace Officer as a result of his alleged involvement.

He was detained.

DRUG WARRANT – ARREST C11-117319

On June 7^th, 2011, members of the Winnipeg Police Service Street Crimes Unit became involved in a drug investigation involving a residence located in the 700 block of Manitoba Avenue.

At approximately 7:00 p.m., in the area of William Avenue and Isabel Street a 49 year old male was placed under arrest for drug related offences.

Officers subsequently executed a Controlled Drug and Substance Act Search Warrant at a residence on Manitoba Avenue where the following items were located and seized:

· 7 ounces of Crack Cocaine – estimated street value of $10,500

· Approximately $27,000.00 Canadian currency

The previously arrested 49 year old male is facing the following offences: Possessing Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking and Possess Proceeds of Crime.

He was released on a Promise to appear.

COMMERCIAL ROBBERY C11-117655

On June 8^th, 2011 at approximately 3:25 a.m., officers responded to a robbery event at a convenience store located in the 900 block of Archibald Street.

The investigation has revealed that a 26 year old male store clerk was confronted by two male suspects. Both suspects attended behind the store counter while armed with knives. The suspects began removing an undisclosed amount of cigarettes and fled the business.

No one was injured as a result of the incident.

The suspects are described as: Males, Caucasian, 18-25 years of age, 5'6"-5'9" in height, medium builds and both armed with knives.

The investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-6219 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).

ROAD WATCH PROGRAM

Between June 3^rd and June 5^th, 2011, members of the Winnipeg Police Service operated the Road Watch Program between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 4:00 a.m.

The program focussed on the following areas:

Hespeler Avenue and Glenwood Crescent

Pembina Highway and Corydon Avenue

Utilizing conventional enforcement and area saturation, 219 vehicles were stopped.

* 13 Alcohol Screening Devices (ASD) tests were performed.

* 7 registering Pass and 5 registering a Warning (24 hour driving suspension).

* 3 drivers were charged with Drive Impaired/Drive over .08.

* 1 driver was charged with Drive Impaired and Refusing to provide a sample.

* 1 driver was found to be subject of a warrant for failing to appear in court and was detained in the Remand Centre.

As a result of the traffic stops, a total of 16 Provincial Offence Notices were issued. Among the offence notices issued there was 1 suspended driver, 5 unlicensed drivers, 3 unregistered vehicles and 2 people were found to be using a cellular phone while operating a motor vehicle.

SUMMARY: Since the Road Watch program began in April 2011, WPS members have charged 21 drivers with driving over .08 and 4 drivers for refusing to provide a breath sample. A further 23 drivers have received 24 hour suspensions after registering a Warning on the ASD. A total of 307 Provincial Offence Notices were issued for various Highway Traffic Act offences.

The Road Watch Program will continue to operate throughout the summer.

ASSAULT PEACE OFFICER WITH A WEAPON – ARREST C11-114663

On June 4^th, 2011 at approximately 10:40 a.m., Winnipeg Police Service Traffic Unit members were conducting traffic enforcement in the area of Donald Street and Lagopoulas Way.

It was at this time, members observed a 2009 Nissan 370Z travelling in a northbound direction in excess of the posted speed limit. Officers, wearing full uniform and high visibility traffic vests pulled the vehicle over and began to approach the driver. The driver then accelerated hard and turned his vehicle in the direction of the officers, causing them to jump out of the path of the vehicle. The driver continued northbound at a high rate of speed.

As a result of the dead end on Lagopoulas Way, the driver drove back towards the officers. Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over a second time when the driver again drove his vehicle directly at officers, causing them to jump out of the path of the vehicle to avoid being struck. The suspect vehicle fled northbound on Donald Street at a high rate of speed.

On June 6^th, 2011 at approximately 4:50 p.m., an off-duty Winnipeg Police Service member observed the suspect vehicle in the area of Waterfront Drive. The off-duty member approached the driver and subsequently placed him under arrest.

A 32 year old male is facing the following charges: Assault Peace Officer with Weapon or Causing Bodily Harm x 2, Drive while Disqualified x 2, Dangerous Operation – Motor Vehicle and Speeding.

He was released on a Promise to Appear.
