Winnipeg Police Service News Release:

Saturday, February 5, 2011    HOMICIDE INVESTIGATIONS – ARREST C11-24698 As previously released, on February 5, 2011 at approximately 2:40 a.m., uniform members, including other emergency personnel responded to the area of the 400 block of Elgin Avenue regarding the sound of shots fired in the area.   Attending members located two males suffering from gun shot wounds to the upper and lower body. Darren Joey SWAMPY, 19 years of age and Lee Brady SPENCE, 22 years of age were transported to hospital in critical condition. They have since succumbed to injuries sustained.   At this stage of the investigation, it appears that the victims, including other individuals were evicted from a house party in the 300 block of Ross Avenue. A short time later, and in the area of Ellen Street and Elgin Avenue the victims met up with a lone male who had also been evicted from the party. It was during this meeting that the lone male suspect produced a firearm and discharged it in the direction of the victims. The suspect fled the area.   Early this afternoon, investigators arrested a 27 year old male in connection to the incident. The suspect fled the area.   No arrest has been made at this time.   Names of the deceased will not be released until notifications to family members are complete.   Members of the Homicide Unit are currently conducting interviews and gathering evidence with respect to the incident.   Anyone with information regarding the incident who has not yet spoken to investigators is asked to contact police at 986-6508 or CrimeStoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).     STABBING C11-24778 On February 5, 2011 at approximately 6:30 a.m., officers were dispatched to the area of Jefferson Avenue and Parr Street regarding a stabbing incident.   The investigation has revealed that a group of individuals were at a party in the area of the 600 block of McGregor Avenue. An argument took place between three female suspects and two male victims, 18 and 19 years of age. The altercation escalated at which time one of the female suspects produced a knife and stabbed the 19 year old male to the lower body. The 18 year old male was physically assaulted about the body. The suspects fled the area.   The 19 year old male was initially conveyed to hospital in unstable condition. Both victims are presently in stable condition.   At this stage of the investigation, both victims are not forthcoming with information regarding the incident.   No arrests have been made at this time.     MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION C11-23907 On February 4, 2011 at approximately 2:00 a.m., emergency personnel responded to a motor vehicle collision in the area of Saskatchewan Avenue and Sturgeon Road.   The investigation has revealed that two vehicles had been stopped on Sturgeon Road due to one of them being stuck in the snow and the other which had stopped to assist. A third vehicle travelling northbound on Sturgeon Road collided with the two vehicles. The drivers of the two stopped vehicles were outside theirs vehicles at the time of the collision and did not sustain any injuries. Thursday, February 3, 2011         MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION                                          C11-23393   On February 3, 2011 at approximately 9:45 AM, members of the Winnipeg Police Service attended to the intersection of Sherbrook St and Cumberland Ave for a motor vehicle collision involving a van and a truck. Winnipeg Police Service News Release

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 1st, 2011   EMERGENCY GRANDPARENT/ RELATIVE SCAM The Winnipeg Police Service would like to inform the public that we have been receiving reports of the "Emergency or Grandparent/Relative Scam". These basic scams involve the suspect(s) calling an elderly person and claiming to be his or her grandchild or another relative. The suspect(s) claim that they are in jail, or have some other critical emergency, and that they need money wired to his or her location. The person further encourages the victim not to say anything to anyone as he or she is embarrassed about being in trouble.  In some instances another person pretending to be a lawyer or Police Officer, talks to the victim and provides them with direction on where and to whom to send the money to. In recent cases victims used money transfer services to send approximately $10,000 to help their relatives, who were later found to be fine. The Winnipeg Police Service Commercial Crime Unit is currently involved in an ongoing investigation with other agencies and is encouraging all care providers and children or grandchildren to discuss this scam with older adults who may be in care facilities or who they feel may be vulnerable to these pressure tactics.   Becoming victim to this scam can be avoided by asking the caller a few pointed questions that only the grandchild or relative would be able to answer. A call trace should immediately be activated upon the caller hanging up to assist our officers with their investigation.
